At first, I thought reporting bugs was simple.
You find something broken, you say “this doesn’t work,” and that’s it.
But after working on real projects, I realized something important: a bad bug report can be just as frustrating as the bug itself.
If the developer can’t reproduce the issue, they can’t fix it. And then everyone wastes time going back and forth asking the same questions.
So I started treating bug reports less like complaints and more like documentation.
My goal isn’t to blame — it’s to help
One thing that changed my mindset completely was this: a bug report isn’t about proving someone made a mistake.
It’s about helping the team understand what happened.
When I stopped thinking “this is wrong” and started thinking “how can I make this easier to fix?”, my reports became clearer and more useful.
It’s not me vs the developer. It’s both of us vs the bug.
Reproducibility is everything
If someone can’t reproduce the issue, the report is basically useless.
So before submitting anything, I always try it again. Sometimes twice.
I ask myself:
Can I make this happen consistently?
What exact steps trigger it?
Then I write those steps as if someone has never seen the system before. Click this. Open that. Type this value. Press save.
No assumptions. No shortcuts.
Because what feels “obvious” to me might not be obvious to someone else.
Details matter more than drama
Early on, I used to write things like:
“The page is broken” or “the system fails sometimes.”
Now I avoid vague words like broken, fails, or sometimes.
Instead, I describe what actually happens.
“The page returns a 500 error after submitting the form.”
“The button stays disabled even after all fields are filled.”
“The app crashes when uploading files larger than 5MB.”
Specific beats dramatic every time.
Why I actually enjoy this
There’s something satisfying about writing a clean bug report.
It feels like leaving a clear trail for someone else to follow. And when a developer fixes it quickly because your report was precise, you realize how much communication matters in software.
Good testing isn’t just about finding problems. It’s about explaining them well.
And sometimes, that’s what makes the biggest difference.
