There’s a very specific feeling every developer knows.
You run your project, something breaks, and suddenly nothing makes sense. The screen is blank, the API returns 500, or the feature that worked five minutes ago just… doesn’t.
Your first instinct is usually panic.
Mine used to be too.
I’d start changing random things, adding console.logs everywhere, refreshing over and over, hoping the problem would magically disappear. Of course, that only made things worse.
Over time, I learned that debugging isn’t about moving faster. It’s about slowing down and thinking clearly.
Step one: stop guessing
The biggest mistake I used to make was assuming I already knew the cause.
I’d think, “it’s probably the backend,” or “it must be this function,” and then spend 30 minutes fixing the wrong thing.
Now, the first thing I do is simple: I stop guessing and start observing.
I reproduce the issue calmly. I read the error message carefully. I check the network tab. I look at the logs. I try to understand what the system is actually doing, not what I think it’s doing.
Most of the time, the answer is already there — I just wasn’t paying attention before.
Break the problem into smaller pieces
When something feels overwhelming, it’s usually because the problem is too big.
So I divide it.
If it’s a frontend issue, I ask:
Is the data arriving?
If yes, then the problem is rendering.
If not, then it’s the API.
If it’s an API issue, I ask:
Is the endpoint called correctly?
Is the request body valid?
Is the database returning something?
Instead of “everything is broken,” it becomes a series of small yes-or-no questions. And small questions are much easier to solve.
Change one thing at a time
Another lesson I learned the hard way: never change five things at once.
Because if it suddenly works, you won’t know why.
Now I try to modify only one variable at a time, test, and then continue. It’s slower, but way more reliable. Debugging becomes almost scientific — like running small experiments until the behavior makes sense.
What debugging taught me
Debugging used to feel frustrating. Now it feels almost satisfying.
It’s like solving a puzzle where every clue leads you closer to the answer.
More importantly, it changed how I think. Instead of reacting emotionally to problems, I approach them methodically. Calm, step by step.
And honestly, that mindset has helped me not only in code, but in everything else too.
Because most problems aren’t chaos — they just need patience.
